“Work in progress. That’s how John Peel thought of his evening sessions, offering artists the opportunity to try out new songs in a studio environment. That’s how I looked at them too. The confirmation of a Peel session date was a signal to get my ideas together, to define material that had hitherto been little more than words scribbled on a page or a tune thrashed out during a sound check.
That’s why some of the tracks here have a different phrasing and arrangement to that which appeared on record. The songs were so new, you can hear I’m still feeling my way into them. Several were conceived and written the night before the session. In one case, I actually composed a song from scratch while the show was on air. That rawness was always a key component of my BBC sessions, the thrill of putting something out there for the very first time.
And here I’ve collected all the best moments across 36 years of my ongoing work in progress.”

“After more than three decades of travelling around the world in a van, or spending all day flying vast distances to play a gig, I’m looking forward to having some time to explore cities that I usually only get to see between the soundcheck and the show. In each town Bragg will perform three unique shows on consecutive nights.The first night’s performance will feature Bragg’s current set, which ranges across his 35 year career. The second will see Bragg perform songs from his first three albums: his punk rock debut Life’s a Riot with Spy Vs Spy (1983), its similarly raw follow-up Brewing Up with Billy Bragg (1984) and Talking with the Taxman about Poetry (1986). The third performance will see Bragg perform songs from his second three albums: the positively jangled Workers Playtime (1988), the pop classic Don’t Try This at Home (1991) and the back-to-basics William Bloke (1996).

This week's batch of vintage BB shirts are now up for bidding on BBbay. Among them is a shirt with the image from the cover of Brewing Up on the front along with the words 'Orientation Festival 1987'. It doesn't specify which university it's from, but looking at the bands named on the back, I'd guess it was somewhere in New Zealand, which I first visited in '87. Can any Kiwis help identify where it's from?
There's also a shirt from the Jobs for Youth tour which I did in 1985. It was the first tour that a rock artist had done in conjunction with the Labour Party and its success paved the way for the Red Wedge initiative which followed in 1986. Finally, I have a few more of those shrink-wrapped 12' x 12' shirts up for grabs.

The hypocrisy of so many hardcore Brexiteers being given seats in the House of Lords by Boris Johnson is breathtaking. One of the main planks of their anti-EU argument was that the British people should not be ruled by an unelected elite. Yet here they are, placed into the upper house of the legislature to make law until they die. There are now over 800 members of the House of Lords, making it second largest legislature in the world, after the Chinese National Peoples Congress.
I've long argued that the Lords should be replaced by an indirectly-elected second chamber in which seats are distributed in proportion with votes cast in the general election. There is no chance of reform while we have this government, but Johnson rubs our noses in it by nominating his own brother, along with a Russian billionaire newspaper proprietor.
Adding to the sense of hypocrisy is the peerage for Claire Fox, a former Brexit Party MEP whose comments in support of IRA terrorism and child pornography have caused outrage in the past. Ironically, she is one of the loudest voices complaining of 'cancel culture'. Surely if such a thing really existed, someone with Fox's record would not be given honours and elevated to the House of Lords?
